What are the benefits of receiving massage? Therapeutic massage is an excellent way to relax and relieve the tension of
daily life. Professional massage therapists are trained to work the tension and
soreness from your muscles. As you relax, you begin to feel rejuvenated and
refreshed.
Therapeutic massage has many benefits to the human body. Below is a list of many
of these advantages:
Massage dilates or
opens up blood vessels, improving the circulation and relieving congestion.
Massage acts as a
cleanser for the elimination of wastes and toxic debris.
Massage relaxes
muscle spasm and relieves tension.
Massage increases the
blood supply and nutrition to muscles produced through voluntary
muscle contraction. Massage thus helps to
overcome harmful "fatigue" products resulting from strenuous exercise
or injury.
Massage increases the
excretion (via the kidneys) of fluids, nitrogen, inorganic phosphorous and salt
in normal individuals.
Massage improves
general circulation and nutrition of tissues, and increases exchange of
substances between the blood and tissue cells.
Massage encourages
the retention of nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur necessary for tissue repair in
persons convalescing from bone fractures.
Massage alleviates
pain resulting from swelling and inflammation or joints in arthritis.
Massage helps
eliminate edema of the extremities.
Massage disperses the
edema of the extremities.
Massage helps to
reduce elevated blood pressure associated with stress.

What to expect when receiving a massage
During your first massage session you will be asked to complete a short
intake form so your massage therapist can assess your medical condition and
tailor the massage specifically to your needs. Your therapist may also ask you
additional questions to determine any contraindications to massage.
Following this initial interview, your massage therapist will take you to a
private massage room and give you further instructions. You will be informed
about what your should wear, how you should lie on the table, how you will be
draped, etc. Your therapist will then leave the room to allow you the privacy to
undress and lie on the table under the drape.
In a few minutes, your therapist will return to begin the massage. Usually their
will be soft music and candles to set a relaxing mood. Your therapist will
undrape a specific part of your body (usually the back first), to begin
massaging the area. Once compete, this part of you body will be re-draped as the
therapist moves on to other parts of the body. This process is competed until
all appropriated areas of the body have been worked.
Generally, during a 30 minute massage, your therapist will concentrate on upper
body only. A 60 minute massage will encompass the full body (back, neck, arms,
hands, hips, legs, feet, and face). With a 90 minute massage, the therapist will
cover the full body as well, but will have more time to concentrate on areas
needing specific attention.
How often should I get a massage?
Generally, most people should get a professional massage every 4-6 weeks.
However, that may vary widely depending on your lifestyle. If you are under a
significant amount of stress in your job or your personal life, then you
probably need to receive massage more often.
Stress is cumulative! It doesn't go away with the passage of time.
In times of
stress, you may need to receive massage every 1-2 weeks until the stress is
abated.
Budget is also a concern. However, massage must be considered preventive health
care. Relaxation and stress relief as a result of massage can help you to avoid
a number of stress related health concerns (e.g. high blood pressure, headaches,
etc.). How much can I expect to pay for a massage?
